What is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a sterol lipid, or fat, created by the liver and transported in the bloodstream to the membranes of your cells. It is a necessary by-product that maintains healthy cell production in the body. However, too much cholesterol in the body can lead to serious problems like heart disease.
What causes high Cholesterol?
There are many factors that can contribute to high cholesterol. Among them are genetic factors; however, diet, weight, activity, and hormones all play a role.
How is high Cholesterol treated?
Long-term treatment includes lowering one’s trans fat — or saturated fat –intake, regular exercise, and increasing the amount of soluble fiber in one’s diet. There are also cholesterol-lowering medicines that can control high cholesterol.
