Literally meaning “porous bone”, steoporosis is a disorder whereby bone density decreases, weakening them and resulting in fragile bones. Osteoporosis leads to abnormally porous, spongy bones. It can lead to multiple fracture
What causes Osteoporosis?
The most common cause of osteoporosis is estrogen deficiency in women, but men can also get osteoporosis, if they have testosterone deficiency. Other causes are a lack of hormones, calcium, Vitamin D, thyroid conditions, smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle.
How is Osteoporosis treated?
Prevention, such as lifestyle changes (exercise, quitting smoking), greatly lower the risk of osteoporosis. There are medications which help with bone formation that can be taken in later stages.
