What is Diabetic Neuropathy?

Diabetic Neuropathy (also known as DNS) is a common complication of type 1 and 2 diabetes. Neuropathy is the gradual reduction in sensation in some parts of the body, most often the feet.

Those who suffer from type 1 and type 2 diabetes can be susceptible to diabetic neuropathy. Other factors include age, high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, alcohol use, cigarette smoking, and problems controlling blood sugar levels. Women are more likely to suffer from DNS than men.

How is Diabetic Neuropathy treated?

The main treatment of DNS focuses on preventing the nerves from further damage. Maintaining low blood sugar levels is paramount. Diet, exercising, medication, and controlling weight are very important in controlling diabetes. Medication is also available for diabetic neuropathy.
