What is Diabetes?
Diabetes refers to a disorder whereby the afflicted experiences the inability of the body to produce, or the inability to metabolize, the human hormone insulin. Without insulin, the blood cannot absorb sugar into cells for energy and into liver and fat cells for storage.
What causes Diabetes?
The causes of diabetes are not clearly understood by scientists or doctors currently. However, it is believed that genetic factors play a large role, as can obesity, due to the extra fat in the body, which affects the functionality of insulin. Age, virus infection, and smoking are also possible factors.
How is Diabetes treated?
While diabetes cannot currently be cured, there are methods of controlling it. Treatment varies dependent upon how much insulin the body produces, and how efficiently the body can process that insulin. The best method is to live a healthy life, losing weight, and eating a proper diet in order to keep blood sugar levels steady. Regular insulin shots also help control the effects of of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
