What is Hypertension?
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is chronically elevated. It is also referred to as high blood pressure or shortened to HT, HTN or HPN.
What causes Hypertension?
While the exact causes of hypertension are not currently known, there are factors which are highly associated with the disorder. They include, but are not limited to, smoking, obesity, diabetes, a sedentary lifestyle, high levels of salt intake (sodium sensitivity),insufficient amount of calcium, potassium, and magnesium consumption, medicines, kidney disease, thyroid problems, vitamin D deficiency, alcohol abuse, stress, age, and genetic factors.
How is Hypertension treated?
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the best counter to hypertension. Medical treatment, however, may be necessary, and can include: beta blockers, diuretics, ACE inhibitorscalcium-channel blockers or angiotensin-receptor blockers, and biofeedback. Many patients require a combination of drugs to control their blood pressure.
