What are Seasonal Allergies?
A seasonal allergy is an allergic reaction to an allergen that surfaces during a certain season. This type of allergy refers to a pollen allergy, such as weeds, trees, flowers, and grasses.
What causes Seasonal Allergies?
Airborne pollen from a variety of seasonal plants enter the body through the eyes, nose, or throat, and act as a catalyst to an allergic reaction. Regularly, the immune system does not respond to mild substances like pollen and mold, but in for some, the body’s defense mechanism recognizes these allergens as it would an infectious agent and mounts an attack. Once the immune system has detected the the intruding allergen, it releases chemicals such as histamine and other compounds, causing localized inflammation that leads to irritation and discomfort.
How are Seasonal Allergies treated?
Seasonal Allergies are traditionally treated with antibiotics, antihistamines, decongestants, and allergy shots.
